The purpose is not, as Greve points out, intended only to change people, but to make
society adjust to them. (1975, p.185) But there are two sides to the coin. The 'treatment'
of individuals may be a way of compelling them to fit in with society - the treatment of
mental illness to prevent danger to others is an illustration; helping people to solve
problems may become, in practice, passive dependency; and the mutual adjustment of
society and the individual may degenerate into social control.
