A hip new haunt at Chamchuri Square serves up crowd-pleasing fare that hits the right spot
The upscale som tum trend has definitely left the building to make room for a more versatile, all-pleasing dining experience. What used to be Papa Paya on the ground floor of Chamchuri Square is not exactly the first place that comes to mind when I ponder unique culinary offerings — and why any Chula graduate would want to unwind so close to their old university (and be reminded of all those insufferable hours of studying and stress) is beyond me.
But, as its name suggests, Common Room is an easy-going venue, most suitable for meeting and hanging out with friends — and in a rather stylish setting, too. With its high-backed sofas, marble and light-coloured wooden walls and occasional dashes of hot red to break up the sombre tone created by all the dark furniture, you might be forgiven for thinking you were somewhere in Thong Lor (until you look out the window and spot the old uni buildings next door).
Although its international menu may come across as rather generic, it never fails to impress (a most crucial point) and so can be enjoyed frequently.
There’s comfort food for everyone here — from Thai, Italian and Japanese to Western and Mexican, making it an easy go-to solution if your fickle taste buds can’t settle on any single cuisine.
One of the most popular appetisers here is the Mexican grilled chicken quesadilla (190 baht). This tastes exactly as it should: terrifically cheesy, with minimal evidence of greens. Although the accompanying salsa could have done with some stronger seasoning, the rich flavour of the marinated, grilled chicken served in the tortilla lifted the whole dish to a wonderful level.
