Conclusions
Currently, there is a growing concern about health maintenance and an increasing awareness of the contribution of natural alternatives, such as fruits and vegetables to a healthy condition. In this context, a good knowledge of food chemistry has become fundamental. The analysis of the composition of strawberry guava deserves special attention, since this fruit can be consumed both phenolic compounds and the seeds contain considerable amounts of fatty acids. The presence of these plant metabolites, which are recognized for biological activities, such as antioxidants as demonstrated here, justify the inclusion of these fruits among functional foods. Thus, the consumption of strawberry guava should be encouraged as a means to increase the intake of these compounds and thereby contribute to maintain a healthy condition. Moreover, these antioxidant data are valuable as a support for dietary guidelines.
