Lesson COG 57
Task: Recognize warning signs.
Prerequisites: ADT 4, ADT 5, S&L 15
Concept: This task is very similar to the previous lesson (COG 56) except that a verbal reaction is also needed. The reason for this is to ensure that the student grasps the concept of why an item can present a danger. Two-word responses such as "stay away" or "don't cat" can serve to show that some understanding is present. Many of these warning signs also have international symbols associated with them. Either the word or the symbol can be emphasized, depending on the student's abilities and environment. Be not that finding items such as a poison or going to areas that have a danger sign do not become rewarding to the student. Reinforcement of the student's behavior therefore should take place after the teaching session and should not be in the proximity of the warning sign. Where reasonable, the real sign in a real environment should be used. Suggested words include poison, eking, high voltage, keep out, warning, do not enter, no smoking, step up, wet floor, and don't walk.
Behavioral Objective: When shown a selected warning sign from a total of 10 taught signs, the student will state what the sign means and in at least a two-word response explain what to do if this sign is encountered to a 100% accuracy level for 20 trials.
Materials: Samples of warning signs to be taught.
Task Analysis:
1. Select one warning sign and take the student to a place where the sign is present or used. Explain to the student what the sign means and prompt a two- or three-word verbal association for that sign, such as "don't touch," "stay away," or "don't go in there."
2. Continue Step 1 until the student provides the verbal response when asked, "What does this sign mean?"
3. Repeat the process of Steps 1 and 2 for all remaining selected signs.
4. Take the student to a variety of randomly selected sample signs (from the materials section) and continue until the objective is toot.
