These conclusions do not imply more work is not needed because
there are clear problems relative to efficient methanogenesis
in anaerobic units treating shampoo and other PCP wastes, especially
with granule-based reactors. However, observations here
on the loss of MSC and MST methanogen guilds in granule treatment units provide a useful starting place for better understanding
process biology. In fact, new hybrid reactor designs now are being
considered that better retain MSC and MST guilds in the reactors
and, in turn, should improve methane production in PCP wastewater
treatment systems.
