When Mirage Resorts received 57,000 applications for 6,500 job openings, they had to tell thousands of applicants they wouldn't be hired. Southwest Airlines sends the same message to thousands of applicants year after year. If rejected candidates feel angry, they may never again purchase services from the organization. If recruiting procedures are viewed as unfair, too lengthy, or too impersonal, rejected candidates may share their dissatisfaction with friends and associates. Like many other "high-demand" organizations, Mirage Resorts and Southwest Airlines must find a way to reject applicants with tact.
