Sensorimotor Training
Sensorimotor training aims to remediate gait disorders, improve posture, and facilitate upper
extremity movement. The therapeutic mechanisms employed include audio-spinal facilitation,
sensorimotor integration, rhythmic entrainment, auditory feedback, and patterned information
processing, particularly that which deals with sonification (Thaut, 1999b ). The standardized
techniques used for gait, posture, and arm and trunk training are Rhythmic Auditory Stimulation
(RAS), Patterned Sensory Enhancement (PSE), and Therapeutic Instrumental Music Playing
(TIMP) (Thaut, 2001).
Therapeutic Instrumental Music Playing (TIMP)-TIMP is defined as the use of musical
instrument playing to facilitate engagement in physical exercise and to simulate functional
movement patterns in motor therapy. In TIMP, musical instruments are selected for their
therapeutic potential and are positioned for playing to facilitate increased range of motion,
endurance, strength, functional hand movements and finger dexterity, and motor coordination.
Musical accompaniments are used to provide structure for the movements.
