Box 11-2 describes an application of the scanlon plan at Herman Miller Company, a nonunionzed firm. Joseph Scanlon, however, came from a union background, and numerous similar success stories involving unionized operations have been reported (Schuster,1984). Inmost cases, the Scanlon plan has been installed at relatively small companies, a fact that perhaps facilitates the necessary communication.
