How do I use the Floppy Disk Drives on the workstations?
Note: these drives are configured to read PC-DOS disks only !!
To use the floppy disk drives on the Linux workstations, first insert the disk into the drive.
Double click on the floppy disk icon on the destop, and a file manager window will appear showing you the contents of the floppy disk.
To move files to and from your home directory, double-click on the Home icon, and a file manager window will appear showing you the contents of your home directory. Then to move the file or folder, just drag and drop it from one window to the other.
Note: to MOVE files, simply drag and drop. To COPY files, hold the 'Ctrl' key down while draging the file across.
For users who like to type all their commands, the disk should be mounted in the directory /mnt/floppy/
You can use all normal UNIX commands to access the files on the floppy disk, eg., cd, mv, cp, ls. You can even edit files "in situ". It acts just as a normal UNIX directory.
If a file is too big to fit onto a floppy disk, (i.e. bigger than 1.44 Megs) then you could try zipping (compressing) the file.
