Science and technologies studies have convincingly shown in
the last decades that matters of fact turn into matters of concern
during controversies (Whatmore, 2009; Callon et al., 2009;
Latour, 2004b; Latour, 2007). The contestation of science transforms
objects and issues that were thought as fixed and stable into
issues that concern the public and raise debate; ‘‘[s]uch situations,
matters or events render what we think we know or, more usually,
what ‘experts’ claim to know about something the subject of
intense public interrogation’’ (Whatmore, 2009, p. 588). This paper
advances our knowledge on these controversies by further unpacking
the processes through which environmental movements play a
role in turning of matters of fact into matters of concern.
Furthermore, it adds another layer of complexity to this argument
by focusing on places, arguing that they are crucial in environmental
controversies and for environmental movements.
