Mulato II shows good response to fertilization, particularly to the application of nitrogen. Depending on the level of soil fertility, one or more maintenance applications may be required per year to maintain high yields of good quality forage. In Atenas, Costa Rica, the forage yield of Mulato II was significantly higher (P < 0.05) than that of Mulato (2.6 versus 1.9 t DM/ha per harveat) with an application of 30 kg N/ha every 30 days for a total of four applications, during the rainy season for a total of 120 kg N/ha per year.
