The provisionofbiogasfromorganicresiduesandwastesaswellasitsuseasarenewablesourceof
energy forelectricitygenerationcouldcontributetoamoreenvironmentalsoundenergysupply.Thus,
this paperpresentsamethodologytoestimatethetheoretical,thetechnicalandtheeconomicpotential
of electricitygenerationfrombiogasofvariousorganicwastesources.Additionally,itincludesan
assessment oftheuncertaintiesalignedwithsuchpotentialassessments.Theoutlinedmethodological
approach comprisesabottom-upresourcefocusedprocedurewithstatisticalandspatialanalysisfor
selected organicwastesources.Thisallowstheidentification ofmunicipalities/regionswhereelectricity
generationfromorganicwasteviathebiogasrouteismostpromising.Themethodisexemplary
demonstratedforthegivensituationinMexico.Thegatheredresultsshowthatthemethodological
approach directstoplausibleresults.TheseresultsshowalsothatMexicohasaconsiderablepotentialto
use biogasfromorganicresiduesasarenewablesourceforelectricitygeneration.Resultsindicatean
averagetheoreticalpotentialofroughly167.9TWh/a(143.5–192.3TWh/a),atechnicalpotentialofcirca
10.2TWh/a(3.6–23.8 TWh/a)andaneconomicpotentialofapproximately6.4TWh/a(2.0–15.2TWh/a).
This latereconomicpotentialcouldbelocatedinaround391municipalitiesinMexico.Themethodology
proposed heremayholdtrueforothercountrieswithsimilarconditionsandconsiderablelackof
primary data.
