The official name , Wat trimit Witthayaram, was given later by the current king. However the temple is more well-kown by tourists as the temple of the Golden Buddha for its having the most invaluable buddha image in the world, 5.5 tons of 18 karat gold, as recorded by Guiness Book in 1999. The image is believed, by the scholars, to be of Sukhothai period, then it is at least 700 years old. This Budda image was transferred form another temple wat Phrayakrai to the current temple wat Sam chin then without being known as a golden one for its was coverd by stucco. Twenty years later, it was found as the goldern Buddha when the stucco was partly cracked when it was dropped to the ground because of the accident. when it was firstly discovered in this temple ,it coud be split into 9 portions such as the head ,the arms and the hands. Nowadays, it cannot be split any more because all of the portions are already welded together
