In the present work, essential oils were extracted using hydrodistillation from leaves and fruits of two Pittosporum species, Pittosporum angustifolium and Pittosporum undulatum. Essential oils from both species were characterised using GC–MS and screened for antimicrobial activity. To the best of our knowledge this is the first time this has been done with Pittosporum angustifolium and the first time bioactivity has been reported for essential oils from Pittosporum undulatum fruit, although previously reported for essential oil from the leaves (Medeiros etal.,2003). For solvent extracts from Pittosporum angustifolium leaves, antibacterial activity and qualitative pharmacological character has previously been reported (Vesoul andCock,2011) but not from the fruits, which were significant in traditional usage. In this study we propose a more comprehensive approach to facilitate direct comparison between fruits and leaves of both species.
