vernacular knows, water isn’t
the only thing that makes its way
downhill. That fact wouldn’t be a problem if
we all lived downstream of a pure mountain spring and upstream
from no one, but that’s not the way we’ve settled.
We are, all of us, nearly, downstream of someone else, and usually there’s
someone thirsty not far from our own sewage outlet.
