AUSTRALIA is to make a fresh bid for another seat at the United Nations Security Council.
FOREIGN Minister Julie Bishop will unveil the bid for a 2029-30 seat in a speech to the UN General Assembly in New York on Tuesday (Wednesday morning AEST).
She will tell the assembly that Australia is seeking the term to promote greater international cooperation to tackle global security challenges.
Ms Bishop told a forum on countering Islamic State and violent extremism - hosted by US President Barack Obama - that while a comprehensive package of domestic counter-terrorism measures had been put in place, it was important to defeat the group at their source.
