In addition to the present study, some previous reports have also suggested the benefits of H. sabdariffa for diabetic complications. H. sabdariffa lowered TG, cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and apo-B100, while elevating HDL cholesterol in diabetic patients.(29) Consuming H. sabdariffa decreased systolic BP in type 2 diabetic patients with mild hypertension.(30) Metabolic syndrome patients treated with H. sabdariffa had significantly improved glucose levels and lipid profiles, and also a reduced TAG/HDL-c ratio, a marker of insulin resistance.(31) The ethanolic extract of H. sabdariffa possessed strong hypolipidemic and antioxidative properties in alloxan-induced diabetic rats, and therefore could be useful in preventing atherosclerosis or related cardiovascular pathologies associated with diabetes.(32)
