Longitudinal long distance rail corridors from coastal gateways often take the
form of a land bridge. Those corridors service a continental hinterland, articulated
by major transportation and industrial hubs such as Chicago and Kansas City. The
double stack trains have unit capacities of up to 400 TEU and a total length of well
above 2 km. The large-scale inland rail freight transport system of North America
is unique in the world, not only because of its sheer size, but also because of the
direct link made between two different coastlines.
