In the analysis, it was found that man-made deterioration had taken place. An earlier consolidation process was noted, which was not done accurately. Excessive use of paraloid B72, a consolidating material, was applied to the surface of the limestone support in high concentrations. This led to the formation of a thick, bright, and non-porous film. Additionally, salt efflorescence was observed on many pigmented areas of the stela. SEM investigation of the blue and green pigments confirmed their fragility and loss of cohesion. In essence, previous restoration attempts had unintended consequences, resulting in further damage to the stela's pigments and support structure.
