Finally, this study shows that the use of extreme
events is a reasonable proxy to assess future climate
change, particularly in cases where time series are not
available. As these extreme events are likely to become
more common, it can be expected that the potentially
toxic as well as the total cyanobacteria biomass should
also increase with a corresponding loss in biodiversity.
