At the same time that new lecturers were being assigned to teach the two courses of this
study, the University of Lappeenranta began to collect feedback information systematically on
all courses as part of its overall quality management system (LUT Quality Manual 2011). This
collected student feedback was an excellent source of information. Feedback is solicited from the
students of every course by emailing them a link to an anonymous electronic survey questionnaire.
They report their satisfaction with the teaching and their learning experiences by applying
a score between 1 (poor) and 5 (excellent) for each statement in the feedback questionnaire see
Table 1. The questionnaire includes general statements on the topics of learning, student motivation,
teaching, the quality of course materials, and the workload of the course. Students are also
asked to give an overall evaluation of the course using the same 1–5 scale. Besides the numerical
statements, the survey questionnaire includes open questions where students are able to comment
and make proposals for further course development. In addition to the information available
from this standard questionnaire, for this study, the lecturers included specific course-related
questions.
