an anterior spinal fusion and received glucose 4% +
sodium chloride 0.18% at 40 mL/h overnight.

Arterial
blood gas demonstrated metabolic acidosis with a pH of
7.25, partial pressure of carbon dioxide 38 mmHg and
base excess of -9.2 mEq/L due to hyperchloraemia
(chloride 121 mEq/L).
