Ebeling et al. (2006) concluded that in entirely heterotrophic
systems there is no production of nitrite or nitrate from ammonia,
suggesting that nitrification was not established during the course
of our experiment. In our study, the activities of the heterotrophic
bacterial community successfully controlled ammonia in BFT
groups. The control of ammonia may have inhibited or delayed
the emergence of nitrifying bacteria, as communities of nitrifying
bacteria grew at a much slower rate than communities of heterotrophic bacteria ( Ebeling et al., 2006 ).
