Next up: the Amazing Thailand app (iPhone version, iPad ‘HD’ version, both free) – produced by the Tourism Authority of Thailand, it aims squarely at the rich tourists interested in shopping and living it up. The app is fairly straightforward, featuring information on destinations, events, promotions, and so on. A few of the sections are a bit slow to load, as though there was very little data built into the app. A nice section on food unfortunately gets hidden under a ‘More’ section, and there’s a lot of data to peruse here.
The text, however, could use some work. Without needing to peruse more than a handful of pages you’ll find more than a few oddball English errors – not exactly a vote of confidence. A neat augmented reality feature screams ‘golly gee whiz’, but in reality is far from helpful, especially in a central urban area.
There’s a lot going on here, and it really would help to have a bit more organization here. It’s free, however, and gives tourists a decent starting place. I wouldn’t use it for any serious traveling, and it’s less helpful than it looks.
