It is reasonable to say that the initial silver release is governed by the external silver nanoparticlesformed on the fiber surface rather than the internal silver nanoparticles formed inside the fiber. The higher percentage of ionic silver in water observed for our product indicates that the in situ synthesis allowed for better particle-leach resistance. Because the nanoparticles were directly synthesized on the deprotonated cotton cellulose, the particles having silver ions on the surface electrostatically bound onto microfibrils. The release of silver ions is governed by the size of particles.
