Since 1996, the Thai government has permitted employers to register their migrant
workers. More recently, migrants have undergone the Nationality Verification Process,
which entitles workers to a temporary passport and legal status. In 2010, just under a
million migrant workers registered with a work permit. It is estimated that there are
still many more undocumented migrant workers in the country and over a hundred
thousand migrant children whose legal status is uncertain.
