Anyone who travels for pleasure is aware of Travel Agents. Individuals and companies who earn a commission by selling products such as hotel accommodation, air and rail tickets and car hire. However there exists another type of agency, one which evolved to service the needs of business travellers.
Business travellers' needs
Over the years a number of these business travel agents began to bring together a range of services which catered for the very different needs of those travelling on behalf of their employers. As the range of products and services offered grew, the role became more complex. With the gradual withdrawal of commission agents began to charge for their advice and the term Travel Management Company (or TMC) was born.
Full service travel management
Now the TMC fulfils a vital role in sourcing a wide range of products, which has been extended to include items as diverse as taxi and parking services and the sourcing of meeting venues and video conferencing facilities, but also in advising on and implementing corporate travel policies and furnishing the corporate client with a plethora of management information covering everything from cost savings to carbon emissions.
