Baron indicate that three conditions must be met to establish mediation (i.e., an indirect relationship). First, the independent variables, church attendance and importance of religion, must have a significant effect on the mediating variables (parental attachment, self-control, substance use, and friends' substance use). Third, the mediating variables, parental attachment, self-control, subsatance use, and friends' substance use, must have a significant effect on the dependent variable, lying to parents. All three conditions must be met.
