Once they reach Agloe, they discover an old barn—but no sign of Margo. With not much time left before prom, the group decides to head back to Orlando. Quentin, however, is determined to find Margo and stays behind. Eventually, Quentin hitches a ride to a nearby town where he purchases a bus ticket back to Florida. There, he sees Margo walk by and chases after her. Margo is surprised to see him, which shocks Quentin. Margo tells him that she has no intention of returning to Orlando and that the clues she left for him weren't supposed to be taken literally. Quentin suddenly confesses his love for Margo, but she tells him that he doesn't even know her. They walk to a nearby diner, and Margo tells Quentin how she was going to run away right after graduation, but decided to change her plan when she found out Jase was cheating on her. Margo explains that she's tired of living a fake life and that a paper town is the perfect place to live for a "paper girl" like her. She further tells him that going to college, getting married, and having kids isn't who she is. Realizing that he has created a fake impression of her all along, Quentin begins to understand Margo's decision to stay behind.
