But as he arrived yesterday,battles raged around the dusty northern town of Bentiu, capital of the oil-producing Unity state, four days after government troops moved to wrest back control.
Defence Minister Kuol Manyang said government troops were in control of the town centre, but that heavy fighting was ongoing in surrounding villages, some five kilometres from the town. Rebels staged a large scale assault on Monday, but waves of gunmen "were repulsed after eight hours of fighting", Mr. Manyang said.
