Convention on standards of training, certification and
watchkeeping for seafarers (STCW), 1978
The aim of this convention was to introduce internationally acceptable minimum
standards for the training and certification of officers and crew members. It came
into force in 1984 and by the end of 1996 had been ratified by 120 states.
Amendments in 1995 sought to complement the ISM Code initiative by establishing
verifiable standards, structured training, and shipboard familiarization.
