To better understand the relationship between force and area,
think about the impact of your weight sitting on a bed. The
force is produced by your weight, which, in this example, will
remain constant. If you lie down on the bed, your weight is
applied over a large area and the bed is compressed to a certain
degree. If you stand on the bed on one foot, your weight is
applied to a much smaller area and the bed compresses much
more. The force (your weight) is now being applied over a
smaller area—therefore the pressure is increased.
