Mask dance which is more than 1300 years old dances collectively known as cham by Bhutanese. It is a unique dance with fascinating history and mysterious reason to perform. Almost all tourists that come to visit our country get attracted by this extraordinary dance which is performed wearing different kinds of mask and outfits. Only Monks are allowed to perform the dances and Monks meditate for days and even weeks before actual day to perform. When monks are questioned “why they wear such evil looking mask to perform the dance?” They say “We show the same form as the evil so the evil can feel fear”. The Buddha showed different paths to liberation, so different people could understand. Some people understand a peaceful form and some people understand a wrathful form. So cham deities take on several forms. Ancient dances are not written, but passed from person to person.
