J4: Personal Salience. First is the extent to which an input from the environment is viewed as being of high or low personal salience.
Research in this area has used two sets of descriptive labels, which are in fact conceptually and empirically interdependent. On the one hand, the salience of a situation or environmental feature has been examined in terms of the degree to which it is rated as personally important, significant, of concern, preeminent, or pressing (how much it “matters to” a person.) In other studies, descriptions have been in term of a person’s wants, preferences, values, needs, or desires-the extent to which he or she “would like” to retain, attain, or change the feature, sometimes viewed in terms of motivation to approach or avoid.
