By counting results with concentrations less than MDLs that otherwise met analytical criteria for valid detections as detections, these studies minimize the probability of “false negative” results — results that would be reported as non detections when the
compound is actually present. Such an approach is valid and may be highly appropriate for research studies whose objective is to survey what compounds may be present in the environment.
