CS121. A physical barrier footwear

CS121. A physical barrier footwear system must be in place with dedicated bird area footwear provided at personnel access points to each bird area. Footwear used on the farm must not be used in bird area. Visitor may use clean disposable overshoes instead of a complete boot change.

CS122. Equipment moved between buildings containing birds must be thoroughly cleaned before it is moved from the inner to the outer side of the barrier.

CS123. Each biosecure area must operate on an all in all out basis, with a period free from animals between production cycles.

CS124. Surgical procedures may only be carried out by competent trained personnel.

CS125. Surgical procedures must be kept to a minimum and performed causing the least amount of suffering i.e. when a minimum amount of tissue is effected and the animal is strong enough to withstand the trauma. All other surgical procedures not required for essential management are prohibited except in an emergency or by a veterinary surgeon making a clinical judgement.

CS126. Breeder males - the following only are permitted: 1. Beak trimming, 2. De-toeing 4th toe only, 3. Despurring - short spurs which do not need removing are preferred, 4. Dubbing - half dub only, small combs are preferred.

CS127. Beak trimming is not allowed in female breeders.

CS128. Birds must only be beak trimmed once in their lives.

CS129. Beak trimming must not remove more than one third of the beak.

CS130. Dubbing and de-toeing must be carried out on birds that are aged 3 days or over.

CS131. The following procedures are prohibited: de-winging; pinioning; notching or tendon severing, which involve mutilation of wing tissues; (when it is necessary to reduce the effects of flightiness, the flight feathers on one wing may be clipped).The use of blinkers which pierce the nasal septum and other forms of devise fitted to the bird's head (such as spectacles, plastic 'bits', contact lenses and nasal bits) which may also cause welfare problems are prohibited; surgical castration and devoicing.


CS132. Medicine administration records must include the following information: identity of medicine and therapy; batch numbers; quantity of medicine or therapy administered; identification of the bird or group of birds to which administered; the number of birds treated; date of administration; date treatment finished; dates when product become fit for human consumption; name of person administering the medicine or therapy and reason for treatment.

CS133. Medicines/vaccines may only be used where they are necessary for treatment or preventative purposes and manufacturer’s instructions must be observed. Prescription only medicines may only be used under the authority of a veterinary prescription.

CS134. Where medicines are used which require withdrawal periods these must be strictly adhered to and records must clearly demonstrate adherence. Withdrawal period must follow period stated on medicine label.

CS135. Care must be taken to ensure that when animals are treated with medicines the substance is not placed in contact with other animals.

CS136. Where there is no medicine licensed for use in the UK to treat a condition in order to avoid causing unacceptable suffering a veterinarian may use the cascade (use a medicinal product authorised for use in another animal species or for another condition in the same species, if no such product exists a human authorised medicine may be used). Where the cascade is used this must be strictly adhered to and written instructions must be given by the veterinary surgeon for each treatment.

CS137. All treatments including vaccinations, worming, anaesthetic; antibiotics and anti-parasite control must be recorded.

CS138. Medicine and vaccine purchase records must be kept which show: identity of medicine or therapy; quantity of medicine or therapy; date of purchase; name and address of supplier; batch numbers and expiry dates.

CS139. Each company must compile an approved drugs (medicines and vaccines) list in agreement with the veterinary surgeon. The list must specify storage, administration and withdrawal period for each drug and make reference to the correct dosage, duration and circumstances of use.
CS140. All medicines and vaccines must be stored in a secure (locked) store and in accordance with any recommendations on the label (e.g. correct temperature and stored up to date of expiry). Medicinal waste must be disposed in enclosed containers. There must be suitable disposable container for sharps. Only staff trained to administer medicinal products shall have access to them.

CS141. Medicines records must be kept for a minimum of five years from the date on which the medical treatment was given.

CS142. Medicines which are banned in the EU or where the active ingredient does not have EU approval are not permitted.
