The silicate monomer and oligomer supplied by the oil–water interface
can immediately react with ( SiO)2Si(OH)2 or ( SiO)3SiOH
groups on the surface of the particles, leading to the growth of the
silicates. The diffusion- and reaction-controlled growth is important
for the sizes and morphologies of silica particles.
