Self-determination was first described as an individual’s perception of the amount of
control that he or she feels over the environment and what happens to him or her (Deci, 1980).
As the theory has evolved, the theorists have broadened the theory to include more than the singular issue of control. However, the idea that feeling self-determined promotes intrinsic
motivation and responsibility in individuals persists
