A rubber grower was shot dead on a road in Nakhon Si Thammarat's Cha-uat district early Tuesday morning, police said.
Pol Lt Panasak Periphas, the duty officer at Cha-uat police station, said the murder occurred about 2.15am. The victim was identified as Wanna Wongprayoon, 34, of village 2 in tambon Wang Ang of Cha-uat district.
Police said Wanna left his house on Monday evening, about 10km from the protest site at Khuan Nong Hong intersection. Before reaching the site, he parked his motorcycle in front of a friend's house and then continued on to Khuan Nong Hong intersection aboard a pick-up with other protesters.
He stayed at the protest site until early Tuesday, and then decided to go home. He returned to where he left his motorcycle and was killed. Villagers in the area said they heard two gun shots and later found Wanna lying dead on the road. Police suspect the attack stemmed from a personal conflict.
Early on Sunday, a guard was killed and another seriously wounded at another protest site at Ban Toon railway crossing in Cha-uat district. Police also said the shooting followed a quarrel. They expect to obtain a warrant to arrest the suspect who has been identified.
