A developing coast and a progradating dune system
of middle S´ wina Gate Sandbar is rarely encountered
phenomenon on the Baltic coast. Nowadays propitious
conditions for coast development can be found on an
investigated area of the S´ wina Gate Barrier. The factors
mentioned above favour dune ridges development and
vegetation succession.
Primarily, the middle part of the sandbar on the
Wolin Island shows accumulative character of dunes.
Other parts are under abrasion conditions (such as areas
near Mixdzyzdroje) or under human impact (S´ winoujs´-
cie and Mixdzyzdroje). Taking these processes into
account, one can say that S´ wina Gate Sandbar can be
divided into a few different parts (qabuz, 2004). One of
them lies on the Uznam Island, where human activity
stops aeolian accumulation on beaches. The second one
lies on the Wolin Island where three different kinds of
development can be found. One of them may be
observed close to the waterbreaker in S´ winoujs´cie where
shore sedimentation is big but aeolian accumulation is
lower than in middle part. In middle part the biggest
aeolian accumulation takes place, expressed in rapid
growth of dune ridges. The last area is situated near
