The apparent occurrence of both types of nitrosation may solve the controversy as to whether gastric nitrosation proceeds as an acid-catalyzed reaction in the normal acidic stomach before premalignant lesions develop, or as a bacteria-catalyzed reaction in the stomach of subjects with premalignant lesions that raise pH and bacterial counts in the stomach.
