Coastal landscapes worldwide are experiencing drastic and rapid
morphological changes which have resulted in severe beach erosion
(Phillips & Jones, 2006). In fact, approximately 70% of the world’s sandy
beaches are receding (Bird, 1985; UNWTO, 2007). Within the United
States, widespread beach erosion has been reported in numerous
touristic locations such as: Point Reyes, California; Isle of Palms, South
Carolina; and Waikiki, Hawaii (Moore, Benumof, & Griggs, 1999; Morton
& McKenna, 1999). The situation is severe in some locations such
as Waikiki where only a very small strip of sandy shoreline is evident
during low tide, and no beach is visible during high tide
