A number of internationally published papers show that in
type 2 diabetes, self-efficacy and self-care behavior play a
vital role in the patients’ compliance with disease management.
Hurley and Shea (1992) and Wang and Shiu (2004)
found that patients with greater self-efficacy were better able
to manage their diabetes self-care. Furthermore, Wu et al.
(2007) proposed using the self-efficacy model as a framework
for understanding compliance with self-care. Nurses can
discuss self-efficacy with patients with type 2 diabetes to
promote improvement in their behavior and health outcomes
(Shi et al., 2010).The findings of all the above researchers are
similar and document the importance of self-efficacy and
self-care behavior in patients with type 2 diabetes in various
geographical areas. This study contributes more information
to this arena in a Malaysian setting
