The second presidential debate in 1992 was held on October 15 at the University of Richmond in Richmond, Virginia. The debate was unique, as it was loosely mondeled after a New England town meeting in which candidates responded to questions from the audience. To facilitate interaction, the traditional podiums were removed and each candidate was provided with a tall stool. Candidates were permitted to move about the stage when responding to questions. Carole Simpson of ABC New played the role of moderator, roaming through the audience to solicit questions from 209 undecided voters empaneled by an independent polling organization. Each question was directed to a particular candidate, bit the other candidates were also given the opportunity to respond. Simpson was allowed to clarify and follow up on questions asked by the audience. No order of response was mandated, nor was the debate balance to guarantee equal time to all three participants. The debate concluded with a 2-minute closing statement from each candidate.
