Methyl isocyanate (MIC),〖CH〗_3 〖NCO〗_, is a colorless liquid. It is water reactive, with a specific gravity of 0.96 ehich is lighter than water. This is the chemical that was released in Bhopal India that killed over 3000 people in 1984. Methyl isocyanate is toxic by skin absorption and a strong irritant. The TLV is 0.02 ppm in air and the IDLH is 20 ppm. The target organs are the respiratory system eyes and skin. The four-digit UN identification number is 2480. The NFPA 704 designation is health 4, flammability 3, and reactivity 2. The white section at the bottom of the diamond has with a slash through it indicating water reactivity. The primary use of methyl isocyanate is as a chemical intermediate. The structure and molecular formula are shown in Figure 8.16.
