This article defines biochemical genetics and describes its use as an approach to understand gene function in metabolism. The article is written from the perspective of microbial systems as these systems are most amenable to this approach. The value of a combined approach that takes the advantage of the strengths of two disciplines, genetics and biochemistry, is emphasized. Both historical and modern techniques are described in the context of a biochemical genetic approach.
