‘Just 10%’ will opt in to Labour
ED Miliband’s Labour funding reforms could tip it into bankruptcy, a union baron has warned.
Mr Miliband wants union members to stop paying an automatic £3-a-year to the party.
But GMB general secretary Paul Kenny predicted just 10 per cent of his 400,000 members will instead “opt in” to Labour, depriving the cash-strapped party of about £1million a year.
The warning came as a YouGov poll showed Labour’s lead over the Tories has shrunk to five points. Labour are on 37 per cent, with the Tories on 32 per cent, UKIP on 12 per cent and the Lib Dems on 11 per cent.
Mr Miliband yesterday also called for MPs to be banned from taking on directorships. He said: “There should be a limit on how much they earn on top of their salaries.”
He also called for political donations to be capped at £5,000.
But David Cameron said a “massive amount” of taxpayers’ money would be needed to fix the shortfall.
He said: “I don’t see why the result of a trade union scandal should be every taxpayer paying for Labour.”
