Semantics is the study of meaning. It is a wide subject within the general study of language. A perennial problem in semantics is the delineation of its subject matter. The term meaning can be used in a variety of ways, and only some of these correspond to the usual understanding of the scope of linguistic or semantics. In semantics, language is considered as a structured system of signs, a bi-partite, interdependent entity. The notion of meaning in semantics is expressed with different dimensions: sense and connotation, denotation and connotation, and literal and non-literal (figurative) meaning.
