in some regions groundwater becomes trapped in porous rocks which are sandwiched between impervious rocks, and the water table may actually be above ground level. if a well is bored through the impervious rock cap, the water may be forced to the surface by the pressure of the groundwater. when this happens, it is called an artesian well.
