Resource-based engineering organisations that take a purely economic view of
global e-marketplace participation can face a number of dilemmas that are difficult to
resolve, such as a lack of trust in supplier relationships, local community opposition
and unsubstantiated cost savings. In contrast, a holistic and iterative approach will
enable organisations to benefit from a more effective understanding of the
consequences of participation. Different perceptions of “a global view” will exist
within the organisation and decision-makers need to maintain a level of consciousness
and understanding of the implications of their decisions for the different parties
involved. Adherence to “traditional ways” and cultural contexts can inhibit the
transition to the global market unless a strategy for promoting the changes is
developed.
